THE REPORT
In May 2022, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) released a report documenting the church leadership's efforts to cover up hundreds of cases of sexual abuse committed by church personnel over multiple decades. The report describes a sustained campaign by the executive committee of the SBC to suppress reports of sexual abuse, oppose reforms to prevent future abuse, and discourage survivors of abuse committed by church personnel from coming forward to share their stories.
The SBC’s executive committee is also alleged to have an internal list of 703 pastors, youth leaders, clergy members, and other church workers who were suspected of sexual abuse. The list was compiled over a decade and shared within SBC’s top leadership.
Just days after releasing the report, the church shared the list of hundreds of church personnel accused of sexual abuse. The list includes more than 700 entries from 2000 to 2019 documenting abuse allegations.
